CLUB NOMAR

Wow. Nomar is a Cub.

So, I've been doing the best I can to keep up with our beloved Cubs even though I'm way out here. The fact that I can watch Chicago's FOX Sports Network at work is a big part of that. But here comes my opinion and my questions for you back home.

First, I've always been a fan of Nomar's. I think he's got a big heart, a consistent bat and is a great shortshop. He's also been pretty injury free in the last few years aside from his big injury at the start of this season. But did they really need a shortstop? I thought it was no secret that the Cubs relief pitching staff is their weakness, shouldn't they have found some people to plug that hole?

Second, we all know I don't like Sosa and this is a great chance for all those wannabe Cubs fans (the ones who go on Friday nights, not for the game but to chat and turn it into Dance Wrigley) to see what fielding is all about. The whole "I-sneezed-and-destroyed-my-back" fiasco really didn't help his case. Oh, and when he stereotypically fanned on that pitch during this year's home-run derby. While he's still a huge slugger I kinda home that next time I go to Wrigley, if it hasn't collapsed yet, I hope to see more Nomar jerseys than Sosa jerseys.

Discuss.

Yes, they needed Nomar. Gonzo didn't do crap last year or this and had to get the boot. Nomar finally gives the team a bat that doesn't strike out every other time. He's gonna be perfect to get on base ahead of the big boppers though. And, the Cubs gave up absolutely nothing in return to get him. Let's hope he signs a nice fat contract and sticks around for a while.

I wish they had done something with the bullpen too, but that doesn't worry me too much. The rotation is back healthy, and Ryan Dempster was added today to work middle innings.

Back to watching my Simpsons dvds. Oh wait, shit...

    1) Nomar is a serious upgrade over the .220 hitting Gonzalez.
    2) It has been very noticable that when Ramirez or Sosa has been out of the lineup do to injuries, the Cubs offense has been stale. So they need a bat BAD.
    3) Cubs hit a ton of homers, but homers do not carry you in the post-season. Nomar gives them the avg hitter they sorely need (to go with Grud).
    4) No problem that you don't like Sosa. I would agree that he is overpaid even. However, I hate when people knock is fielding skills. Check the stats. He is #2 in right fielders for fielding percentage and has one error in the field. Granted, when he does err, he does so destructively.
    5) Teams can still do deals in August, they just have to go through waivers. But the Cubs might still try to get a closer. Hawkins is a brilliant setup man, but as he has proved here and in Minnesota, he is not a closer.
    6) Go CUBS. top

I compare Sammy Sosa to one former professional Baseball player. This player played for the Cleveland Inidians. That man is Pedro Cerrano. See Pedro had a problem hitter the curve ball, but he hit the fastball very, very well. I feel Sammy has similar issues, except he fails to hit even the Fastball. In the end no matter how bad they sucked, they still kept there jobs for one reason. "Everyone loves the homerun."
